AP Breakfast, Senior Showcase, & The End of the First Semester...

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first semester.  A reminder to students and parents that 2nd quarter grades close this Friday, January 20, 2012.  Please make sure that all work is completed.  Report cards will be out shortly for the 2nd quarter.  Students in semester courses are participating in final exams this week as well.

On Friday, January 13, we hosted our first annual Advanced Placement Recognition breakfast.  Students who are currently enrolled in an AP course were awarded t-shirts for the second consecutive year.  T-shirts were designed by Tyler Scaglarini and produced by senior Jessica Hawker.  Advanced Placement classes are extremely rigorous and we want to recognize the hard work by students and t-shirts.  This year a breakfast was added and a plaque was designed to include all student names.  This plaque will be hung in the halls of PSHS so that future students can work to attain this type of goal.  Over 130 students participate in these courses.  Many students take part in more than one AP course during their junior and senior years. Our goal is to continue to increase offerings as well as student participation.  We have added both an AP Psychology and a second AP English class over the past two years.  Some students also participate in AP courses not offered at PSHS via our Virtual High School Program.  Congratulations again to all who were recognized.

Finally, our first annual senior showcase is Tuesday, January 17th.  Twelve seniors have participated in a senior project elective this past semester.  They have worked diligently to select an area of interest to explore as a potential career.  The purpose of senior project is to empower all students to explore an area of great personal interest that extends beyond the classroom setting.  Through this project-based learning, students have applied knowledge and connected research that culminates on Tuesday with a showcase demonstrating their learning stretch.  Students have produced physical/written products, oral presentations, and portfolios.  They experienced authentic learning by completing at least 15 hours with a mentor outside of school.  Please see the authentic learning tab on our school homepage for more information.  We are very proud of these twelve students and the many teachers involved in this initiative.

Again, do not hesitate to contact us at any time with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child.  Please review our school website for updates, athletic schedules, and much more!  Thanks again.
